As a young child, I used to dream that I could "walk" on my tippy-toes in the same way other people dream that they can fly. Sometimes I even tried to do it after I woke up. Of course I was bitterly disappointed.
Do you suppose that "reality check" might have represented a metaphor for the encroaching responsibilities of growing up?
